Putting the Out in Scouting ... Since 1909

Frequently Asked Questions:

Are you or your child interested in joining Scouts (as a Beaver Scout, Cub Scout, Scout or Leader)?

Do you have questions you'd like answered?

Let's take a moment to try to answer the most common questions for you:

1) Are we too late to register?

It's never too late to register.  We encourage enrollment at any point through out the year.

2) Is Scouting right for my child(ren)?

This is a very good question, all groups run their programs based on the program as set out by Scouts Canada, however the means by which we accomplish this can be varied based on beliefs and abilities of the individual groups or leaders.  At 3rd Winnipeg we believe that the best way to run our programs is to allow the youth a say in it's planning while keeping the required programming as the underlying base to build upon.  We also strongly believe, as our moto says, to "Put the Out in Scouting" which means the youth will have at least one meeting a month which will be out of the facilities.  Community service and environmentally friendly are core elements of the Scout Program which we at the 3rd take very seriously.   Scouts are taught, as early as beavers, to respect the environment with the concepts of "No Trace" Hiking and  Camping.  The youth are taught to "Leave no trace and take away only pictures and memories".

In the end, if your not sure, take advantage of the free three week trial period.  It's a great way to give your youth the opportunity to see what the organization is about and more importantly whether they feel comfortable with the group.

3) How much it is to Register?

Registration for the 2013/14 season is $200.00.  The Scouts Canada fee breaks down as follows: $77.50 for Scouts Canada National and $122.50 for Manitoba Council.  3rd Wpg is currently not levying any additional fees and will assess our financial situation post National fund raising.

4) Are there other costs?

Yes there are/can be additional costs.  There are weekly dues of $1.00 (for Beaver Scouts) or $2.00 (for Cub Scouts and Scouts) per week collected 10 weeks in advance to offset the costs of outings/activities.  Additionally for those activities, such as camps, when the costs exceed the funds available from dues where charges will apply.

5) Can fees be paid over a period of time?

Yes, if fees are a concern, we are always open to discussion.  Scouts Canada is dedicated to ensure youth participate equally, with the "Leave No One Behind" program and 3rd Wpg supports this initiative.  Confidential meetings can be made with a member of the Group Executive to discuss your particular situation.

6) How can I help?

Help is always needed, whether it be in the form of volunteering to make phone calls or becoming a leader, every bit of help is greatly appreciated.  Afraid you don't have what it takes to be a leader.  Scouts Canada offers training for new leaders which, in conjunction with mentorship from other leaders, will give you the base needed to be a successful leader.
